What does Dragstone stand for?
Dragstone is the grinding stone that does all the grinding work in the mill, just as this platform does the heavy work in your automated environment: heavy and reliable, spinning and turning year after year.
What are the recommended hardware specifications?
That depends on how complex project you are setting up, but memory is the most important factor when using lots of plugins. Each instance of a plugin will reserve a couple of MB in memory (an instance is a copy of a plugin used in the project, ie if you drag and drop the same plugin twice, they count as two instances using double the amount of memory as only one instance).

For a typical home automation scenario you will be fine with a device as small as a Windows stick. For large and complex industrial solutions you might need to step up to a server.

The plugins will make use of multi-threaded processor(s)/multi cores, so if you are using plugins that will do long running tasks or heavy calculations, your solution will run smoother on a computer with a newer/better processor.

Do I need to be online for the platform to work?
No. Dragstone is developed to work without an internet connection. However, there are some minor features that will be disabled such as New version notifications for plugins.

Take note that some plugins might require internet access in order to work properly. This information is available in the right column on the plugins page.

Is the platform secure?
Dragstone itself does not expose any points of communication on its own. Dragstone uses the proper way of communicating with your hardware, just as the hardware (or service) API is meant to be used. However you need to make sure your accessible hardware is secured in a proper way. One of the biggest concerns is if to open up ports in your firewall for accessing the platform/hardware from the web or to make it an all LAN solution.

Make sure you read the manual and properly understand all the hardware you are using in your IoT solution.

Why is Dragstone not a cloud platform?
There are plenty of cloud based IoT solutions on the market today but there are also plenty of both pros and cons of having all the functionality in the cloud. We decided to have the Dragstone platform primary as a local platform with the ability to extend it for cloud operation via plugins. Being a home-automation centric solution we premiered latency, security and autonomous operation.

Sometimes a company goes bankrupt. If that company is the cloud based IoT solution you invested time and money in, it is all gone! With a local solution like Dragstone, you would still own the platform and can continue to run it without worries.

Does it cost anything?
No, Dragstone and all of our own plugins is totaly free of charge if you are a private person.

If you are running a business and want to install Dragstone there is affordable plans for you depenging on how many installations you need (installation refers to Core-installations. The number of Dash och PUI-users can be as many as you like).
